H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III receives the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award

        The International Salute Committee Chair, Madeline Y. Lawson, proudly announces the 20th Anniversary International Salute to the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that will feature five distinguished honorees:

        The Honorable Diane Watson, (D-CA), a recently retired Member of Congress, will receive the Dr. Dorothy I. Height Leadership Award;

        H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, World Buddhist Leader and International Arts Master, will receive the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award for International Service and Leadership;

        H.E. Jose’ Miguel Insulza, Secretary General of the Organization of American States, will receive the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award for International Service;

        H.E. Dr. Klaus Scharioth, Ambassador of Germany, will receive the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award for International Service; and

        The Hon. Howard Koh, MD, MPH, Assistant Secretary for Health, Dept. of Health and Human Services, will receive the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award for National Service.

        The 20th Anniversary Breakfast Celebration will take place Sunday, January 16, 2011 at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel. Attendance is by invitation.

        Begun in 1991, the celebration is held annually to honor the extraordinary legacy of famed civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his impact both at home and abroad. The event has evolved over the years through the leadership and support of a Distinguished Honorary Committee chaired this year by H.E. Dr. Klaus Scharioth, German Ambassador to the United States. Other Honorary Committee Members are Henry H. Brown, retired Senior Vice-President of Anheuser-Busch Company, founding sponsor of the Salute and Honorary Chair Emeritus; members of the Diplomatic Corps; Dr. Sidney Ribeau, President, Howard University; The Honorable Robert Stanton, Deputy Asst. Secretary, U.S. Department of Interior; Dr. Steven Knapp, President, The George Washington University; Dr. Allen Sessoms, President, University of the District of Columbia; and the late Dr. Dorothy I. Height, Chair and President Emerita of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. This year’s event will pay special tribute to Dr. Height and Rainey Brown, founding members of the International Salute.
